Inside the game

Everything past “tap to play”: what each screen holds, and the few things that are not obvious at first glance.

Companions

Ten friends, one at your side

One friend runs beside Pip on every run. If Pip is hit, the friend takes the hit and steps away, so a friend is a second chance; from the second BLOOMBURST of a run on, a BLOOMBURST brings them back. Each one brings an ability of its own.

  • Befriend a friend with Seeds, or tap Invite on their card and gather their favourite fruit on your runs until a wild one appears on the path. Run into it and it joins you.
  • Luna can only be befriended with Seeds. In the free game, Hedgie is the friend you can befriend.
  • Hearts grow with the metres you run together and a treat of Seeds. They are for the friendship, not for power.
  • Inventory, the acorn, lists everything you have gathered and whose favourite it is.

Daily

Three goals a day

A warm-up, a craft and a BLOOMBURST goal every day. Each one pays Seeds when the run ends, and finishing all three pays a bonus.

  • Every goal you finish plants a flower in This Week’s Garden. At 5, 10 and 15 goals it pays out again.
  • In the free game you are only given goals you can reach in Dawn.
  • The screen shows when the next three arrive.

Upgrades

Spend Seeds, once

Three upgrades, each bought once with Seeds and kept for good.

Second Heart
The first hit of every run spares you and your friend.
Wider Spore Radius
Gather good fruit from further away.
Head Start
Every run begins with a chain of 15, a quarter of the way to a BLOOMBURST.
  • Seeds are earned only by playing. Nothing in the game is sold for money except the one unlock.

Field Book

The Field Book

Pip’s notebook of the forest: Pip herself, the friends, the fruit, the creatures, the forest and the hours of the day. Every page is open from the start, and most have a model that turns slowly beside the notes.

  • Swipe sideways for the next entry. The arrows beside the section name change the section.

Leaderboard

Farthest run, most BLOOMBURSTs

Two Game Center boards: this week, all time, or among your Game Center friends. Your own place is always on screen.

  • With the Audio Guide at Medium pace, runs are practice: their distance stays off the Farthest Run board, while their BLOOMBURSTs still count. Hard is the regular speed and counts for both.

Settings

The few that need a word

Most of Settings explains itself. These are the ones worth knowing.

Audio Guide
Play by ear: every alert sounds from the lane it is about. Pace sets the speed, and Learn the sounds plays each one.
High Visibility
Signals say what is coming in each lane, and fruit gets a rim of light. Choose the signal size and colour.
Color-Blind Mode
Harmful pickups wear stripes instead of relying on purple.
120 Hz and Shadows
Shown only on iPhones that can use them. 120 Hz is smoother and uses more battery.
Restore
Brings back the unlock bought on another iPhone with the same Apple Account.
Reset settings · Start over
Reset puts the settings back. Start over, tapped twice, erases your progress on this iPhone and in iCloud, and keeps your purchase and your settings.

Sound

Made for this forest

Every hour of the day has its own songs and its own ambience, down to the rain. The songs are timed to Pip’s footsteps, and where an hour has more than one song, each new run moves on to the next.

  • Music, effects and ambience were levelled against each other for this game. The default volumes are where they sound best.
  • Headphones are best, at a low, comfortable volume. In the Audio Guide each side lane is in one ear.
